How to Prepare

All Western Overland Adventure tours require participants to be self sufficient in terms of food, water, fuel, camping equipment, and vehicle preparations. You can find detailed information on how to prepare with our Vehicle Gear Requirement and Camping Requirement lists. This tour is rated a 3 on our trail difficulty scale. In order to register, your vehicle must meet the minimum requirements for this difficulty rating.

On the Best of the San Rafael Swell tour you will have approximately 250 miles between locations with food and fuel availability (depending on reroutes) over road conditions ranging from improved gravel roads to technical trails that require high clearance and 4WD low range. Additionally, much of the area that we will be in has little or no cell phone coverage. Weather is a factor that no one can control, so plan for the unexpected. Early October in this part of Utah is usually warm during the day, but temperatures can drop dramatically at night. Additionally, fall rain storms are not uncommon at this time, this can alter the trail and camp conditions; please plan accordingly.
